No joke, the Hurricanes' 2023 season is almost here!

Happy 1st of April everyone!  It's true, the 2023 summer swim season will be here before you know it.  Registration is only three weeks away.  With that in mind, I wanted to send out a few notes and reminders to make sure everyone is ready...

Summer 2023

The summer swim season begins on Tuesday, May 30 -- that's the day after Memorial Day.  Some of the details around in-season events are still being worked out, but you can find the schedule we have so far in the Meets and Events section of the website.

Registration

Registration for the 2023 season will open at 3:30pm on Saturday, April 22.  Registration will be available online via the website (https://hallowell.swimtopia.com) as well as in-person at the Olney Community Library.  If you setup a Swimtopia account last year, you'll be able to use that account to login and speed through the online registration process this year.  If you'd like to register in-person, or if you know friends who'd like to join us this year and have questions for our coaches and managers, the library is located at 3500 Olney-Laytonsville RD, Olney, MD, 20832.  In-person registration at the library runs from 3:30 - 5:00pm on April 22.

Cost

The cost breakdown for the 2023 summer swim season is listed below.  You must be a resident in good standing of either the Hallowell or Lake Hallowell communities, or you must purchase an outside pool membership to be part of the team.  If you need to purchase an outside pool membership, you can find the details here.  (Note that as I write this message, the HOA hasn't yet updated for the 2023 season.  It should be soon!)

  • Family Fee:  $115
  • Swimmer Fee:  $95 per swimmer
  • Volunteer Opt-Out Fee:  $395

What does all this mean?  The cost for signing up one swimmer for the 2023 season is $210 ($115 + $95).  The cost for signing up two swimmers is $305 ($115 + $95 + $95).  Every additional swimmer is another $95.

As for the opt-out fee, that's something we hope we never have to collect from anyone.  We encourage every family to complete their volunteer commitment during the season.  The opt-out fee is only charged to families that don't complete that commitment.

Volunteering

It's true, we can't have a successful summer swim season without lots of help.  Just pulling off an 8-lane swim meet requires 24 timers, three stroke & turn officials, a Starter, a Referee, people working concessions...  You get the idea.  There are lots of opportunities to help during the season, and we absolutely need your help!  Each volunteer role is worth a certain number of points.  The points breakdown for 2023 is as follows:

  • Returning families:  18 points
  • New families:  12 points
  • Families with ONLY pre-team swimmers:  6 points

Volunteer registration opens on May 23.  Stay tuned for more information as we get closer to volunteer time.  For questions about volunteering, send an email to [email protected] to reach our volunteer coordinators.
